Your Mission: Weed Control

Maintaining your yard can be a large task, just with doing the basic bush pruning, grass cutting, and leaf raking. Then you've still got to deal with those pesky weeds that always seem to come back. There are plenty of ways to go about weed control, some with better results than others.

Pulling weeds is a strenuous and aggravating task. Many people prefer to do this as weed control, rather than to use chemicals that may be harmful around healthy plants, fruits and vegetables. Taking them each out of the ground by hand may take a while but you are usually able to get them up by the root, which gives you more time to enjoy your garden or lawn before the weeds come back.

Mulching is one of the most effective weed control methods. This works by blocking the sun from feeding the seeds that are trying to grow into weeds. You can make mulch out of leaves, wood shavings, and old grass clippings. You can also purchase mulch that is specifically designed as a form of control. This is better than natural mulch because it allows water and air to get through, while still blocking out the sunlight.

Chemical weed control is usually the last resort because it can be harmful to the other living plants in the area. True, it will get rid of the weeds but usually it ruins the area to where you cannot even get plain grass to grow in the future. Some chemicals may also be harmful to use around fruits and vegetables that are grown for consumption.

Weed control is one of the most difficult tasks for someone trying to maintain their yard and garden. They are stubborn, and you can be sure that they will always try to come back to make their presence known in the very areas that you spent so long grooming to perfection.

Q. I had two large ivy beds in my front yard and decided I wanted all ivy removed as many weeds where taking over. It was a massive undertaking. My workers dug up everything, sprayed with weed killer, then spread pine straw.
